Abstract

The demand for mobile data has been rising exponentially. Gadgets like smartphones and tablets are being rolled out at an unbelievable pace. New apps for streaming music and video content, cloud storage and interactive gaming are being launched. The user is becoming hungrier for more data. The flipside to this is that most mobile operators have eliminated unlimited plans and have increased the data costs. The user has no choice but to pay huge bills.

DataMiser is a solution that helps alleviate this problem. It is an intelligent application that can figure out what content the user might use and downloads this to her device when she is connected to Wi-Fi. This means that when she tries to access content when on a 3G or 4G network, some of that content is already available on the device thus reducing the amount of content downloaded from the cellular network.

How does it work? Consider the following scenarios. Do you read news from the same website while you travel to work every morning? Do you have that one friend on Facebook who posts really funny videos that you always watch? Do you always stream a particular station on Pandora at lunch time? There are definitely patterns to how you access content on your mobile device. DataMiser picks up these patterns and takes advantage of them by reducing your data download which means that you are effectively enjoying more content than what your data plan would have entitled you.

The DataMiser app runs in the background on your mobile device and logs information about your data usage patterns as well as your Wi-Fi and cellular availability. This information is sent to the DataMiser server over Wi-Fi which uses the historical and current information to predict what content you might be requesting. This content will be downloaded to your device over Wi-Fi without interrupting normal operation. When you decide to use a precious chunk of your data plan to watch that funny video, it might already be there on your device. The more DataMiser learns about you, the better it predicts, giving you, the user, more than what you bargained for.

Personal Statement

We are a team of three members. All of us share a common passion for technology and innovation and view this competition as an opportunity to make a contribution in this domain. Akash is a PhD student from Rutgers University working in Winlab. His research areas include networking and scheduling techniques for wireless technologies with a strong focus on algorithms. Ashwin recently graduated from Rutgers University with a Masters degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering and works as a Software Developer for wireless systems. He has prior experience with mobile applications. Samson also is recent graduate from WINLAB at Rutgers and is currently working as a product development engineer focussed on latest LTE technology . He has a strong expertise in cellular technologies, mobile networks and spectrum access techniques. Between us, we have diverse areas of expertise covering every technical aspect of our project which we will use to successfully accomplish our goals.
